Yeah, this is definitely not Sludge and although I’m no expert for electronic music, I have to tell you that Arms And Sleepers new album “Find The Right Place” is absolutely worth a listen. Ambient Hip-Hop beats meet relaxing melodies and lyrical rap samples, making you feel like you’re tripping on acid a whole night. Get yourself some saggy jogging pants, your favourite XXL Sleep shirt and scrape the remains out of your grinder to chill the shit out of this fabulous record.

Once more a Swedish band manages to deliver a piece of great music. There must be something in the Scandinavian air – maybe some haze in the Northern sky? (Sorry.) Besvärjelsen means “conjuring” and it’s truly like magic, how this band is combining some of the best psychedelic Doom riffs, melodies and beats in 2018. Mainly spreading Black Sabbath and Candlemass vibes, Besvärjelsen also add Folkish parts to their music. Hexvessel fans will like it!

Black Rainbows – Pandaemonium

With their last full-length, Italian fuzzers Black Rainbows disappointed a little and my hopes for „Pandaemonium“ were rather low – boy, had I been wrong! This new release feels much different: it has a brilliant production, songs that are on point, have good hooks and an overall more focused feel to it that will excite even fans, who felt a bit let down by the band recently. Probably one of the biggest surprises this year and a very fine mix of classic Stoner grooves, fat riffs and a pinch of spaced out star-fuzzery.

The summer is coming and what else could be better than hanging out in the park with some nice “Acid Cream”… uhm … I mean ice cream! Killer Boogie’s new record “Acid Cream” is the perfect soundtrack for both. The trio delivers extremely fuzzy Vintage Rock sound with a lot of groove. It doesn’t sound too far-fetched that the creative process behind this record was influenced by the one or the other drug. What’s good for Black Sabbath, can’t be bad for Killer Boogie. “Acid Cream” is a perfect mixture of 70’s Fuzz Rock, Garage Rock and Blues. If you’re on the hunt for a band that sounds similar to Radio Moscow and Fuzz, this record is just perfect for you.

Post-metal and Prog pioneers Hypno5e did it again… They released an album, that nobody would have expected. Not only, did they create 75 minutes of dreamy, pure, acoustic and intense music. The new album “Alba, les Ombres Errantes” is the original soundtrack to a film project Hypno5e mastermind Emmanuel Jessua brought to life, showing the places in Bolivia, where he grew up. A breathtaking visual that supports the music in a strong way, but the combination of both is the best way to enjoy it. When you liked „Tio“ on the previous release “Shores of The Abstract Line”, you will definitely dig this album. Prepare yourself for a journey of the mind!

“The Thundering Heard (Songs Of Hoof And Horn)” is the third full-length release by US Doom outfit Eagle Twin. Their sound combines “the power of the riff with the freeness of jazz”, as they state on their website, resulting in rather long, complex songs. The album consists of four of these monsters with a length of up to 14:22 minutes. A talent for powerful wordings, crushing riffs and their ability of creating a thick atmosphere and keeping it up during these long songs make this record an intense trip that sounds exactly like what you would expect when reading the album title.

Blackwülf – Sinister Sides

Author: Tamino Freitag

Band: Blackwülf
Album: Sinister Sides
Genre: Grunge / Doom
Label: Ripple Music
Release Date: February 23, 2018
Listen & Buy: JPC, Amazon, Bandcamp
Social: Facebook, Instagram
Website: blackwulfusa.com

Blackwulf from Oakland are back with their third record, again released on Ripple Music. And what an album it is! Diverse, but not experimental, and fresh without being too modern. “Sinister Sides” is rooted deep in the sound of bygone decades, yet is not a simple copy. The opener “Gate Of Sorrow” breathes Alice In Chains (Singer Alex’ voice is similar to Layne Staley’s), the second song is a fluffy, light rocker, a non-kitschy ballad brings on the feels, and the rest is riffing like as if straight out of Birmingham. Awesome record, buy it and love it!

UR – Grey Wanderer

Album: Grey Wanderer
Genre: Sludge / Doom Metal
Label: Droneburg Records
Release Date: November 1, 2017

The Grey Wanderer’s journey leads through barren deserts, rifts and mountains. From time to time he can rest and meditate amidst the landscape’s panorama, but traveling across the wilderness always means to overcome obstacles. The music of UR is deep, mainly slow and vibrating. Like walking through wasteland and climbing on rocks, it won’t work without patience and the will to inner contemplation. Cloaked in Sludge/Doom Metal, this guys from Leipzig are drawing their own vision of an atmosphere mentioned above. The postish-clean guitars and rare, but haunting growls complete a sonic experience, that really engrosses.

THALL! Welcome to the technical side of dirty Doom sounds mixed with Djent rhythms and extremely downtuned six-strings. Combine it with vocals that let your own vocal chords bleed by only hearing one verse and you got “Mark Of Rot”, the current debut release of Denmarks Cabal. The bone-crushing heaviness gives you a constant feeling of uneasiness – but still, you can‘t get enough. With guest appearances by Thy Art Is Murder‘s CJ McMahon and Filip Danielsson of Humanity‘s Last Breath, the Copenhagen-based Cabal join forces with two of the most anticipated vocalists regarding Deathcore or Technical Djent. This thing is a massive and intense beast with some hidden gems that should be heard.

With „De Doden Heben Het Goed III“, Belgium’s Black Metal avant-gardists Wiegedood continue playing their atmospheric, monotonous and epic style of Black Metal. Once more, they succeed in taking the spirit of bands like Weakling to the next level, adding that dark intensity, which makes every single Church Of Ra band so special. This third album is a solid sequel to Wiegedoods‘ two other releases. You shouldn’t expect too many experiments, but another record of constant Wiegedood quality.
